MONDAY, MAY 13, 2002 A proposed sale of federal land to the Mormon Church could set a precedent for the protection of sacred sites. The bill affects a 1,640-acre tract of land in Wyoming. If approved, observers say tribes could make the case for sites throughout the country. Rep. Jim Hansen (R-Utah), chairman of the House Resources Committee, is pushing the bill, which is supported by other members of Congress who are also members of the Mormon Church.
