A proposed sale of federal land to the Mormon Church could set a precedent for the protection of sacred sites.

The bill affects a 1,640-acre tract of land in Wyoming. If approved, observers say tribes could make the case for sites throughout the country.

Rep. Jim Hansen (R-Utah), chairman of the House Resources Committee, is pushing the bill, which is supported by other members of Congress who are also members of the Mormon Church. The panel's ranking member, Nick Rahall of West Virginia, is drafting legislation affecting sacred sites.
