Fight expected over gas taxes
THURSDAY, APRIL 11, 2002 The courts may end up deciding whether the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska owes gas taxes for distributing oil to fellow tribes. Lance Morgan, CEO of the tribe's economic development corporation, told Jodi Rave of The Lincoln Journal Star that a settlement is needed or the fight will drag out for a few years. He said the matter is a government-to-government one between the Winnebago and tribes in Kansas. The state, however, contends the tribe owes $1.2 million in back taxes for distributing the gas.
