Winnebago Tribe's gas trucks seized

The state of Kansas on Tuesday seized two gas delivery trucks owned by the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska.

The state contends an arm of the tribe's economic development corporation owes $1.25 million in taxes. The money is owed for distributing or importing oil from another state, said Department of Revenue secretary Stephen Richards.

Lance Morgan, CEO of Ho-Chunk Inc., the tribe's economic development corporation, told Indianz.Com last night he is being sued for the taxes. He also said Winnebago tribal chairman John Blackhawk and HCI Distribution are targeted.

Morgan said the trucks were seized while delivering gas to tribes in Kansas. The tribe recently finalized a gas tax compact with Nebraska and Iowa.

Separately, the state also filed tax charges against a Kansas company yesterday.
