Peyote limited to recognized U.S. Natives

State and federal authorities in Texas are limiting the sale of peyote to members of federally recognized United States tribes.

The state used to allow anyone with at least 1/4 Indian blood but stopped after receiving requests from non-recognized tribal members. Canadian Aboriginals and Mexican nationals are also prohibited.

Peyote, a hallucinogen, is a sacrament in the Native American Church and grows wild in South Texas and northern Mexico. Only six people in the U.S. are licensed to sell and harvest the cactus.
