Cayuga land claims appeals pushed
THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 2002

Two New York counties have asked a federal judge to certify an appeal of the Cayuga Nation land claim.

The counties are making their move now that a final judgment was entered in the case. U.S. District Judge Neal P. McCurn said the tribe is owed $247.9 million in damages for stolen land.

The counties have entered motions separate of the state of New York. The counties aren't actually on the hook to pay the money, which is on hold pending a state appeal and potential settlement.
