Native Hawaiian lands threatened
MAY 24, 2001

Native Hawaiian homelands are being threatened by a lawsuit which challenges the way the state administers Hawaiian affairs.

It follows on the Rice v. Cayetano Supreme Court case which struck down a vote limited to Native Hawaiians. Subsequent lawsuits have changed other Native Hawaiian programs.

Opponents say they are race-based. The Department of Justice has recommended Congress recognize a government-to-government relationship with Native Hawaiians but a bill to do that failed to clear the Senate last session.

Senators Daniel Inouye (D) and Daniel Akaka (D), both of Hawaii, have reintroduced the bill this session.
