'Fighting Sioux' school sets goals

The University of North Dakota on Tuesday released its five-year strategic plan, calling on less reliance on federal funds to support Indian students.

Last year, the plan said, the school spent $10 million on programs and grants for Indian students. But most of the money came from federal and outside sources.

Of the money, $5.5 million was for financial aid in students. But most (65 percent) of it was supplied by tribal scholarship and the Indian Health Service.

The school had 420 self-identified American Indians and Alaska Natives enrolled last year. The school is controversial for its "Fighting Sioux" nickname, which tribes in the region all oppose.
