'Fighting Sioux' arena opens
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2001 The controversial new $100 million "Fighting Sioux" hockey arena opened at the University of North Dakota on Friday. As reported, an Indian statue is located in front of the arena. But benefactor Ralph Engelstad has dedicated it to Sitting Bull and claims it does not purport to depict the Lakota leader. The arena opened as participants in a mascot conference rallied against the school's continued use of the "Sioux" name and logo. No confrontations were reported. Get the Story:
