UND mascot conference opens today
WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2001

The Northern Plains Conference on American Indian Nicknames and Logos opens today at the University of North Dakota with a speech by environmental and political activist Winona LaDuke.

The conference will end on Friday with a rally at the new Ralph Engelstad Arena, which will open for its first hockey game the same night. Financed by wealthy alumnus Ralph Engelstad, the arena will include a statue depicting a Sioux warrior on a horse.

The school's nickname, "Fighting Sioux," is opposed by tribes in the area and most Native students. Engelstad threatened to drop the $100 million arena project if the school scrapped the nickname.

The school's logo depicts an Indian head.
