'Fighting Sioux' matchup to go on
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 2001 It looks like an upcoming hockey game between the University of North Dakota and St. Cloud State University in Ohio will go on, despite warnings for UND to leave its controversial "Fighting Sioux" nickname and logo behind. Although officials at the two schools don't dispute the battle over the name, a news report published on Monday indicated the request was made recently. But according to both schools, the events occurred this past spring. St. Cloud State has opposed the use of all American Indian mascots. The school sought for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association and North Central Conference to prohibit Indian names but the committee in April voted it down 9-1, with St. Cloud being the only supporter.
