Cayuga Nation welcomes Indian Country decision
WEDNESDAY, JULY 23, 2003 A spokesperson for the Cayuga Nation of New York said the tribe was pleased with a federal appeals court decision affirming the Oneida Nation's land rights. The Cayuga Nation cited the case when it repurchased ancestral territory and opened a gas station. Under the Oneida decision, the land would automatically be considered Indian Country and free of state jurisdiction. The Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma has also cited the case, having purchase 229 acres of ancestral territory on which it intends to open a bingo hall. Get the Story:
