Analysis: R.I. governor 'paternalistic' on Indians

"At a Green Airport news conference, [R.I. Governor Donald] Carcieri criticized and lectured Thomas and Narragansett tribal leaders, accusing them of deliberately flouting the law and engaging in a sort of political blackmail.

A former teacher, Carcieri at news conferences often falls into a classroom-like repetition of his major points, as if to to make sure his audience of ever-younger reporters understands his message.

When applied to the Narragansetts yesterday, it came off as paternalistic. "I'm hoping . . . I can talk some sense into them," Carcieri said. "This is not a good thing, It is not a good thing for them."
