Judge calls for receivership for Meskwaki funds
MONDAY, MAY 19, 2003

The elected council of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa doesn't plan on putting any tribal funds in a receivership, a spokesman said.

The elected council and an appointed council are battling over control of the tribe, tribal finances and the tribal casino. The appointed council asked a state court judge to freeze $160 million in tribal assets while the dispute is worked out.

The judge didn't grant the request. But he said the the tribe's assets should be placed under the court's control or the factions should let the Bureau of Indian Affairs sort out the mess.
