Conn. court upholds jurisdiction over tribe

The Connecticut Supreme Court on Monday upheld state jurisdiction over the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation.

In State v. Velky, the court rejected arguments that the state can't prosecute crimes that occur on the Schaghticoke Reservation. The tribe is state-recognized.

Schaghticoke Chief Richard Velky is accused of assault. The state Supreme Court ordered a new trial because certain evidence was not properly considered.

The tribe has been denied preliminary federal recognition by the Bureau of Indian Affairs.
