Cayuga Nation joins Catskills casino race

The Cayuga Nation of New York wants to build a $500 million casino in the Catskills on the site of a racetrack.

The tribe, which had rejected gaming in the past, is partnering with Alpha Hospitality. They will ask the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take 30 acres of land into trust. A BIA official said approval could be easier due to prior consideration of the land for an earlier casino deal.

State law authorizes up to three off-reservation casinos in the Catskills. The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe has asked for federal approval for another facility.
