Activist sees anti-mascot movement growing
TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 26, 2002

American Indian Movement activist Vernon Bellecourt spoke at a University of North Dakota forum on mascots on Monday night.

Bellecourt is head of the National Coalition on Racism in Sports and Media. He said thousands of high schools have dropped their Indian-themed mascot and symbols and that higher education institutions and professional sports teams would eventually see the light.

UND's nickname is the "Fighting Sioux" and its logo features an Indian. A new school arena, paid for by a private benefactor who is a Hitler aficionado, has Indian imagery plastered throughout.

The forum was sponsored by B.R.I.D.G.E.S. (Building Roads Into Diverse Groups Empowering Students), a student group.
