Opinion: Change 'Fighting Sioux' nick

"At this point in the history of American race relations, our inability to abandon racial symbol patterns set in the 1930s reveals a community dragging its feet reluctantly into the 21st century when it comes to race relations. “Race” is one of several elephants lumbering around here that we “don't like to talk about.” It increasingly seems that progress on this issue will have to occur via some outside mandate, which is a real tragedy for UND, this town and this state.

So, what can people who haven't simply “given up” on the community do at this point? A few ideas:

-- Honor the tribal council requests and the requests of scores of national American Indian and civil rights organizations

-- Speak out on the issue.

-- Urge the Grand Forks Herald news division to improve its balance of coverage regarding the logo issue and issues related to the Engelstad Arena.

-- Read the American Indian press.
