Okla. tribe criticizes scare tactics
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2002 The Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma says its claim to ancestral land in Kansas is being distorted. The tribe has been negotiating with the federal government over a 9,000-acre former Army site in Kansas. Claiming it as a former reservation, the tribe asked Secretary of Interior Gale Norton to transfer the land. But according to a local county, those talks are failing because the tribe now claims 1.6 million acres. A tribal spokesperson refuted the assertion.
