Wayne Smith seeks protection

Wayne Smith, the former deputy to Assistant Secretary Neal McCaleb, has asked for federal whistleblower status after being fired from his job.

The request went to the Office of Special Counsel, an independent federal agency. An answer this week is expected on whether Smith's case can be taken.

Smith charges that he was fired when he refused to reverse a decision affecting a small California tribe. He says the White House tried to pressure him.
