Alaska governor drops objection to Native deal
Friday, December 12, 2003

Alaska Governor Frank Murkowski (R) has dropped objections to a land swap benefiting Alaska Native corporations.

The deal has been scaled back, however. Instead of $12.5 million and 18,000 acres, the state will use $2.5 million in federal and private funds to buy 2,100 acres of land belonging to Native corporations on Afognak Island.

The Department of Interior will pitch in $1 million to help the state. Murkowski had objected because he didn't want money from the Exxon Valdez oil spill trust fund to be used to buy the land.
