SEMO student senate votes against Indian nicknames
Tuesday, December 9, 2003

The Southeast Missouri State University student senate voted 24-3 on Monday to get rid of the school's "Indians" and "Otahkians" nicknames.

The school has used the nicknames since at least 1922, according to the Associated Press. The school doesn't have an Indian mascot or use images of Indians but has a logo of an "SE" with an arrow through it.

Some fraternity members attend games dressed up as "red men," with their faces and chests painted red.
