Alaska village cemetery threatened by tides
Monday, December 1, 2003

Residents of the Alutiiq village of Port Heiden, Alaska, are struggling to protect their tribal cemetery from high tides.

Last week, two caskets and two bodies were swept into the sea. Villagers are busy exhuming other remains and building new coffins in preparation for reburial at a new site.

A second cemetery is located near the ocean but the tides are expected to drop this week.
