Native man survives to tell of police brutality
Monday, November 24, 2003

For years, Native men were turning up dead on the outskirts of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Many in the Native community suspected police involvement.

Their fears were confirmed in early 2000, when a Cree man from the Salteaux First Nation came forward to tell his story. Darrell Night had been abandoned in the freezing cold by two white policeman, who eventually admitted to the crime but spent only 8 months in jail for unlawful confinement.

Other Natives weren't as lucky as Night. Two men, Rodney Naistus and Lawrence Kim Wegner, died within days of Night's ordeal. No one has been brought to justice for their deaths, which were deemed "inconclusive."

The case of Neil Stonechild, 17, has refocused attention on police brutality. He froze to death in a remote area of Saskatoon in 1990. The provincial government has called an inquiry to examine the case.
