Navajo president softens view on energy bill
Monday, November 24, 2003
Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. softened his stance on the energy policy legislation that was blocked in the Senate last week. Shirley has been an outspoken critic of provisions that would limit the Department of Interior's involvement in energy development on Indian lands. He has said the bill would undermine the federal government's trust responsibility. A statement attributed to him that was read during a press conference of the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) last week reiterated that view. But Shirley now says the bill is positive because it prohibits uranium research on the reservation. He says the statement wrongly made "disparaging" remarks against Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), who largely drafted the measure. The bill passed the House but was blocked Friday in the Senate by Democrat and Republican opponents. The text of the conference report for the bill can be found at http://energy.senate.gov/legislation/energybill2003/energybill2003.cfm. Get the Story:
