Presidential candidate meets with Cherokee leaders

Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards met with leaders of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma on Sunday.

Edwards mentioned the need to improve Indian health care, education and economic development, The Native American Times reported. He took questions from Cherokee leaders, including Cherokee Chief Chad Smith, who stressed tribal sovereignty.

Last week, six Democratic candidates spoke to the 60th annual National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Edwards was unable to attend.
