Oglala Sioux Tribe deals with budget shortfalls

The Oglala Sioux Tribe council today will discuss budget shortfalls that have forced layoffs and salary reductions.

The tribe has enacted an emergency ordinance to cut spending, has laid off 60 employees and has reduced salaries of some employees and the council members, The Rapid City Journal reported Other actions taken include discontinuing of Christmas bonuses and other project and program bonuses, prohibiting funding for powwows and athletic activities and freezing of travel.
