Editorial: Stop 'pussyfooting' on Chief Illiniwek
Monday, November 17, 2003

Like it or not, the Chief Illiniwek at the University of Illinois is here to stay, The Bloomington Pantagraph says in an editorial.

The paper says anti-chief protesters have lost the battle. "What they see as a mascot demeaning the American Indian, especially the Illini tribe that once inhabited Illinois, is seen by pro-Chief people as a revered symbol of national pride at the university for 77 years," the paper says.

Last week, the university trustees were being asked to vote on retiring the mascot. But the motion was withdrawn by the board member who offered it.
