Eastern Cherokee Tribe pleased with land swap
Friday, November 14, 2003

President Bush signed the Department of Interior's appropriations act into law on Monday, authorizing a land swap benefiting the Eastern Cherokee Tribe of North Carolina.

The tribe will receive 143 acres in Great Smoky Mountains National Park for use as a tribal school. In exchange, the tribe is giving 218 acres to the National Park Service.

The land swap was opposed by conservation groups and was slipped into the Interior bill at the last minute.
