Oglala Sioux Tribe lays off 50, reduces salaries
Thursday, November 13, 2003

The Oglala Sioux Tribe of South Dakota has laid off 50 employees and reduced salaries of elected officials by 20 percent.

The tribe is trying to save up to $400,000 by the end of the year to account for budget restrictions. The Bureau of Indian Affairs won't advance the tribe money for programs because the tribe is considered "high risk." Tribal leaders say they may have to repay the federal government $15 million for cost overruns.
