Navajo Washington office director denies charges
Thursday, November 13, 2003

The executive director of the Navajo Nation's Washington Office denied allegations that racism and opposition to an energy bill pending in Congress were behind the firings of two employees and the resignations of two others.

The employees claim that Sharon Clahchischilliage told them to act more like the "white people" at the office. They also claim she told them their opposition to the bill damaged the tribe's relationship with Sen. Pete Domenici (R-N.M.), the major sponsor.

Sharon Clahchischilliage, a Republican tapped to head the office by President Joe Shirley Jr., said the employees' views on the energy bill were not a factor.
