Editorial: Bush trying to weaken preservation law
Wednesday, November 12, 2003

Efforts to protect the Muscogee Creek homeland could be hindered if the Bush administration has its way with historic preservation laws, The New York Times says in an editorial.

A provision in federal law protects historic sites from highway projects. "But as Congress begins negotiating a new transportation bill, the Bush administration and the highway lobby are trying to weaken those protections in the name of 'streamlining' the process of building the nation's roads," the paper says.

The Five Civilized Nations are opposing plans to build a highway through the Ocmulgee Old Fields in Georgia, considered the cradle of Muscogee civilization. "If the law is changed, it is not clear that those who want preservation will have an important voice in the decision," the paper says.
