Flap over shakeup at Navajo Nation Washington office
Tuesday, November 11, 2003

Four former employees of the Navajo Nation's Washington, D.C., office say they were fired because they opposed provisions in the national energy policy bill and say they were told to act more like "white people" by the office's Republican director.

The employees say they were terminated by Sharon Clahchischilliage without cause. According to a news release cited by The Farmington Daily Times, Clahchischilliage told them they damaged the Navajo Nation's relationship with Republican Sen. Pete Domenici (R) by lobbying against provisions in the energy bill.

Clahchischilliage is a Republican appointed to run the office by President Joe Shirley Jr. Some Navajo leaders say she should resign.
