Reno-Sparks tribe announces development plans
Wednesday, November 5, 2003

The Reno-Sparks Indian Colony of Nevada announced plans to develop tribal land where a Mercedes-Benz dealership will be located.

The 14-acre site is located in south Reno. Local officials fear the dealership and other development will reduce its tax base.

But the tribe and the state already have an agreement where sales and cigarette taxes go to the tribe. The agreement has been in place for 12 years.

Tribal officials met with the editorial board of The Reno Gazette-Journal yesterday. In an editorial, the paper says the tax agreement "between the colony and the state is a good one" and shouldn't be changed just because the tribe is moving forward with development. "It has prevented the kinds of controversy that has erupted in numerous other states over taxes and tribal businesses, controversies that often must be settled in the courts to the detriment of local governments," the paper says.
