Neb. students helping to preserve Omaha language
Wednesday, November 5, 2003

Students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are helping preserve the language and culture of the Omaha Tribe.

Professor Mark Awakuni-Swetland created a program that connects the students to the Omaha community in Lincoln and on the Omaha Reservation. Some are white, others are Indian, but all feel connected to the tribe.

Students in the program have created an Omaha-English language cookbook. A manual on constructing teepees is in the works.
