Paintball attack on woman treated as hate crime
Tuesday, November 4, 2003

Police in Anchorage are treating a paintball attack on an Alaska Native woman as a hate crime, and are following up on another Native women who said she was threatened.

Early Sunday morning, Sonya Wharton, 19, was hit several times by what she said was a group of White males. They shouted things like "Natives suck" and "Natives should die," she said.

Police found paint shots at the scene of the incident. They suspect other people may have been victimized. A second woman has come forward saying she was threatened by two youths late Friday night but she was not hit with paintballs.

In 2001, three White youths videotaped themselves shooting paintballs at Alaska Natives while making derogatory comments.
