Alaska tribal corporation starts compost business

The village corporation owned by the Kake Tribe of Alaska has started a gardening compost business.

Kake Tribal Corporation is marketing "Totem Soil" to plant nurseries and chain stores in the the Pacific Northwest and Southcentral Alaska. The compost is made of fish-processing waste and sawdust.

The corporation employs eight and is looking to increase the workforce to 18.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture last month awarded a $47,326 rural development grant to the corporation.
