Northern Cheyenne Tribe suing BIA to keep program
Friday, October 31, 2003

The Northern Cheyenne Tribe of Montana has sued the Bureau of Indian Affairs to keep control of a social services program.

The tribe's self-determination contract for social services expired Monday, prompting the BIA to resume control of the program. But according to The Billings Gazette, Northern Cheyenne President Geri Small would not allow the BIA to start the process, leading to a physical confrontation at the tribal offices on Tuesday.

A federal judge is set to review the tribe's case.
