Eastern Cherokees use grant to pass on traditions
Thursday, October 30, 2003

Qualla Arts & Crafts, a non-profit group based on the Eastern Cherokee Reservation in North Carolina, was recently awarded a $20,000 grant to help teach Cherokee traditions.

The money is being used to cover costs for workshops in beadwork, basketry, woodcarving and other crafts.

The Cherokee Preservation Foundation, an entity created by the Eastern Cherokee Tribe when it signed a gaming compact with the state, awarded the grant. This fall, the foundation has awarded 25 grants totaling $3.2 million.
