Wis. tribes said to be near deal over proposed mine
Monday, October 27, 2003

The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe and the Sokaogon Ojibwe (Mole Lake) Tribe of Wisconsin are near a deal that would stop a proposed zinc mine, The Capital Times reported.

The tribes are purchasing mineral rights from Nicolet Hardwood Corp., the company that wants to open the mine, the paper said. State lawmakers have been briefed on the deal but none would comment publicly.

Several tribes oppose the mine, fearing damage to Rice Lake on the Mole Lake Reservation. The lake is a source of wild rice.

The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe, which owns a casino, would provide most of the funding to purchase the mineral rights, the paper said. Timber rights would remain with Nicolet.
