Native teen competed in Columbus Day pageant
Thursday, October 23, 2003

A Native teenager from Syracuse, New York, recently competed in the city's first Ms. Columbus Day Pageant.

Ashley Johnson, whose tribe is not identified, was hesitant to compete because some Native Americans do not celebrate Columbus Day. But she decided it was OK to join.

"That was a long time ago," she told The Syracuse Post-Standard. "That's history. I hope we all can get along."

Johnson did not win the title but was first runner-up.
