Idaho officials object to tribe's authority
Wednesday, October 22, 2003

Officials in Idaho don't want the Coeur d'Alene Tribe to exercise environmental authority over the southern third of Lake Coeur d'Alene.

The tribe owns the southern third of the lake. Its ownership was confirmed by the Supreme Court in 2001.

The tribe is asking to be treated as a state by the Environmental Protection Agency. The status would enable the tribe to enforce its own water quality standards.
