Tribes take part in talks to keep Klamath in spotlight
Tuesday, October 21, 2003

Tribes in northern California took part in a conference aimed at keeping the Klamath Basin in the national spotlight.

Several tribes depend on water and fish in the basin for subsistence. Their access to water, however, has been restricted in favor of farmers and other users.

In the lower basin, the Hoopa Valley, Yurok and Karuk tribes saw the deaths of more than 33,000 fish. The Hoopa Valley Tribe is battling water users further south for a share of the water.

In the upper basin, the Klamath Tribes of Oregon saw their water cut back by the Bush administration. The tribes have unquantified water rights and are negotiating for restoration of their land base.
