Jena Choctaw Tribe awaits answer on trust land
Monday, October 20, 2003

The Jena Band of Choctaws from Mississippi is asking the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take two parcels of land into trust.

The 47-acre parcel will not be used for gaming. The tribe, which received federal recognition from the BIA in 1994, doesn't have a land base. The application is being reviewed by the BIA's Eastern Region office in Nashville, Tennessee.

The 54-acres is intended for a casino and is undergoing more scrutiny at the BIA Central Office in Washington, D.C. The tribe is hoping to negotiate a Class III compact with the state.
