Cowlitz Tribe prepares land-into-trust documents
Thursday, October 16, 2003

The Cowlitz Tribe of Washington is working on an environmental assessment for a land-into-trust application.

The tribe first asked the Bureau of Indian Affairs to take 152 acres into trust last year. According to The Oregonian, the BIA sent the application back because it did not specify whether the land was to be used for gaming.

The tribe wants the option for gaming. The draft assessment indicates that a casino would be built on up to 71 acres of the site.

The tribe's federal recognition was finalized in January 2002.
