R.I. town doesn't want tribe to have jurisdiction
Thursday, October 16, 2003

The town of Charlestown won't agree to a land-into-trust decision for the Narragansett Tribe unless the tribe gives up jurisdiction to the state.

The tribe wants 32 acres for a housing project. The Bureau of Indian Affairs has agreed to take the land into trust.

The town and the state sued to stop the decision. But last month, U.S. District Court Judge Mary Lisi ruled in favor of the BIA and said the land would not be subject to state or local jurisdiction.
