Bear faction takes most votes in Meskwaki primary
Thursday, October 16, 2003
The results of the two primary elections held by rival factions of the Meskwaki Tribe of Iowa are in.
According to The Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier, the top three vote getters are allies and members of the appointed council, headed by Homer Bear Jr.
A total of 335 people voted at the tribal center, the original location for the primary.
A total of 160 people voted at the Bureau of Indian Affairs school, where the elected council, headed by Alex Walker Jr. held its primary. Walker was not among the top vote getters.
The BIA withdrew from the election process due to the competing primaries. Agency officials have not said which votes they will recognize.
