WSJ poll: Should states be able to tax tribes?
Wednesday, October 15, 2003

"Should states be able to tax revenue from casinos on Indian reservations?" That's the question the Wall Street Journal is asking on its discussion.

As of this morning, the "Yes" votes were winning by a wide margin. Of the poll respondents, 72 percent supported state taxation of tribal casinos.

"We signed treaties with the Indians that exempt them from tax. It's wrong to violate a contract just because it's to your advantage to do so," one person wrote on the discussion page.

"Gambling is commerce not income and the states have a right to tax commerce," wrote another.
