Cow Creek chairwoman rouses Democratic faithful
Monday, October 13, 2003

Sue Shaffer didn't expect to speak at a gathering of the Oregon Democratic Party on Saturday night. But the chairwoman of the Cow Creek Band of the Umpqua Tribe of Indians gave an impassioned speech against President Bush that thrilled the crowd.

The nerve to stand up and tell us were building water lines and we're building schools in Iraq, when our own countrys infrastructure is crumbling. How about feeding our children, and educating them? she was quoted as saying.

Shaffer received the state party's first Eleanor Roosevelt Leadership Award.
