Indian law lucrative for Natives and non-Natives
Monday, October 13, 2003

Drawn to the profession by Indian gaming, the number of Indian law practitioners has exploded in recent years.

Law schools throughout the nation are offering Indian law courses. Some states, like New Mexico, have an Indian law section on the bar exam.

Organizations like the Northwest Indian Bar Association are seeing increased membership. The group has 160 members, up from 21 just a year ago.

But nationally only 3,000 Native Americans are practicing Indian law, said Gabriel Galanda, head of the Northwest Indian Bar Association.
