"The conflict between the explorers and the indigenous people initiated much suffering. Diseases unwittingly brought to the New World by the Europeans decimated native people--one Caribbean tribe of 3 million was virtually wiped out in a generation. Warfare killed many, cultures were lost.

Nevertheless, we owe what we are today to the courage, strength, and vision of Columbus and his crew. Whatever their failings, they did bring us America."
